The Nena Cares Story

Nena Cares was founded by an amazing woman named Akosita who was a teacher before migrating from Tonga to Australia in 1982. She has over 40 years experience in the care sector, caring for newborns, young children, youth, right through to elderly.

For over 30 years she has worked as an accredited interpreter and translator for various government agencies. Akosita became a registered nurse because she loves helping people, especially her family and community. For over 20 years she has worked in aged care and disability and she identified a need for high quality support. She is passionate about caring for people with disabilities particularly those with autism, intellectual disability and down syndrome, neurological disorder, and mental health.

Akosita’s greatest achievement is being a mum of four children and proud grandma to six grandchildren. She loves her grandchildren unconditionally and they are what drives her to make a difference in the world and to create a worthy legacy.

Akosita’s grandchildren call her Nena (pronounced Neh-nah..which is the Tongan word for grandma). This is why Akosita chose the name Nena Cares because everyone deserves to feel the love, care and warmth of a Nena.
